Tweet Tweet

I am a die hard social media fan and I read recently that people today switch back and fourth aimlessly between apps on average about 500 and something odd times throughout the day. I was surprised it was not more. With this in mind, it was hard to choose my current favourite or trendiest social media/internet related thing, but because I have used it more than others today, I am going to write my opinion on Twitter.

One of my favourite apps right now is Twitter. When I was in high school Twitter was the online place to be, and after falling off the wagon a bit following high school, the friends that I have made in University have re-introduced me to the world of Twitter and I am so happy that they did. I personally use Twitter for the comedic aspect, but I also love that you can find news updates, or more serious and empathetic tweets around certain tragedies or events where millions of people band together - days like #BellLetsTalk in which Bell donates money overtime someone shares a tweet containing the hashtag.

Some of my favourite accounts to follow on Twitter are Spotted at Laurier, which has some useful information but also hilarious and relatable tweets about our school. Here is a link to one of my favourite tweets by Spotted as of this year: https://twitter.com/SpottedLaurier/status/1039191759329345537

What is also nice is that all the comedic accounts that are on platforms like Instagram also have Twitter accounts so you can see all the up to date memes and trends in one place. I reload twitter so much it is embarrassing, but I just can't get enough. While Spotted at Laurier holds a place in my heart, my favourite person who I follow is definitely Chrissy Teigen. She is the ultimate social media genius in my eyes and has a witty comment for just about everyone. She is brutally honest about her 'mom bod' and being a mom in general, and her relationship with husband John Legend just to name a couple things. Here is the link to her bio:

My favourite internet or social media related thing may change within a few days, but for now I am quite content to scroll mindlessly through Twitter laughing about pointless thing and sharing them with my friends, all while forgetting I have homework to do.

  1. Hi Lauren!

I agree with you on your last statement: "My favourite Internet or social media related thing may change within a few days", I feel like the applications we choose to use on an everyday basis changes frequently. These changes depend on what my friends decide to use in order to communicate with them, whether it is a new filter on Snapchat that they are addicted to or maybe there is a popular issue circulating the news feed of Twitter at the time. I personally never got into the scene of Twitter until recently, where the YouTube influencers I am subscribed to heavily rely on Twitter as a platform to connect with their viewers on the days where they are not uploading content. I have always had a Twitter account since high school, so I decided to restore my profile and update my feed according to my current taste. I now find that it is an outlet to become more connected to these influencers I look up to and genuinely enjoy their online personas. Following them on Twitter keeps me up to date with when they are planning to upload, what they are planning to upload, and it also gives me a platform to be a part of the conversation that takes place in real world time.

  2. Hey Lau,

I really liked your blog post because before reading it, I had thought that I was the only person who still used Twitter. Not only does it hold content for entertainment, but it's a social media platform that keeps you up to date on the latest celebrity gossip and national news headlines that we would not be able to reach outside of that platform and news applications. In relation to other social media platforms, I find that Twitter is not only a source of entertainment for its users, but it's almost as if it is a blog within itself. Being able to post/delete your own content, reply to others' content, and stay up to date on current world issues all within one application is one of the most compelling aspects of the entire platform. Not only that, but being able to access it with ease and within one click has encouraged its user to continue using their platform. Twitter has helped its users stay connected with one another, while simultaneously providing an open space for us to communicate our opinions to relate - and even disagree - with the opinions of others.
