Blog Post #1- Ice Breaker

Hi Everyone,

A social media app/website that I use often is Facebook. Although many consider Facebook to be a ‘lame’ website that died down, I find it to be quite useful to this day. Facebook is the one website where I am connected with people I have known since I was very young and people I have met recently. Facebook is essentially a sort of time line of my life, from pictures I have posted to posts that I have shared with my family and friends. Also, it is the one website that my entire family takes part in no matter where they are in the world; keeping us connected worldwide. Apart from all of that, seeing as there is a vast variety of smartphones being produced in this day and age, if someone has an android and someone else has an iPhone, Facebook is a perfect place to create a group chat that does not restrict the phone type. I find this to be especially helpful when doing group projects for school. This is the link: https://www.facebook.com

  1. Hi there!

As you have mentioned, individuals do believe that Facebook is a website that is not as prevalent in today's society as it has been when first created. Personally, I believe that although this may be true to an extent, it is still a popular social media platform that enables individuals worldwide to connect with one another. Personally, I agree that Facebook is a website that is demonstrated as a kind of 'time line'. Since Facebook had come about when I was in elementary school, all of those that I have become friends with and those I am continuously meeting are part of my friends of Facebook. This platforms holds old and new information and pictures about individuals you have met at specific points of your life.

  2. I remember the elementary school days where Facebook was what everyone was up to. No other social media platforms were yet introduced. When instagram, twitter, and snapchat came into the force, many teens took part in these platforms rather than Facebook. This meant that Facebook was no longer the dominant social media platform amongst teens. You mentioned that Facebook has “died down” which I believe it definitely has for the younger generation, however has been sort of taken over by the older generation. Many adults now use Facebook as a main source of communication meaning it’s popularity has just shifted towards the older generations. I feel like this is much of the reason that younger users are resulting to other platforms… to have privacy from their parents and other “generation X” users as well as their interest in the more visual platforms.

  3. Hi there,

I agree that Facebook is perceived to be less popular these days, however I still think it is very practical for school and work. If I have a group project, it's very easy to connect via Facebook Messenger especially if I wasn't able to get everyone's phone numbers. I also worked at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment this summer as an intern and we used an intranet version of Facebook called Workplace, which was very convenient to have considering how large the company was. Although it may not be considered the "coolest" social media platform to use, I find it to be an excellent communication tool.

  4. It has been interesting to see our relationship with Facebook evolve over the years, specifically how our relationship with Facebook has changed with the introduction of new social media platforms that have become more popular in usage amongst people our age, these platforms of course would be primarily be Twitter and Instagram. It was interesting that you considered Facebook to be a sort of timeline of your life. While I agree, I no longer consider Facebook to be the platform I look to for the purpose of tracking the memories from my life. Instead, if I am interesting in reminiscing past memories, I look through my Instagram posts as well as my friends posts that I am tagged in. If I am looking for memories that were "written", I scroll through my past tweets. This is not to say I do not often use Facebook, however, I still find myself logging on multiple times a day.
