Medium is one of my favorite places on the internet. If you’re ever short on time or feel uninspired, Medium is one of the best places for a “pick-me-up”. The world’s most insightful writers and readers come here to share and gain new perspectives. You'll find everything from The Scientific Case for Eating Bread to What If Reality Isn't Real. You’ll find topics on design, politics, entrepreneurship, tech, science… you'll always leave learning something new! I find myself reading endlessly on here.


2. Perfect platform for writers

Medium is also a great outlet for your own writing. Unlike a standalone blog or website, you’re part of a network. You can see many people’s perspectives and those people and ideas build up each other. For example, Obama wrote about immigration and people were able to respond and talk about their own immigration experiences. Medium was created by former Twitter CEO, Evan Williams, with the intention to encourage long-form writing and has become a great example of social journalism.

3. Medium will make you a better human being

Every day, we play the role of teacher and student. We have to teach someone something inherently through conversation. It might be letting your friends know what time to meet for coffee, or giving a stranger directions to DAWB. We're constantly communicating what's in our minds into language. We're also constantly trying to be better students, in the sense of listening. When someone is critiquing your character or ideas, it’s easy to instantly put up a wall and find yourself countering their arguments. Similarly, on Medium, you’ll encounter ideas you’ll love, but also ideas you'll possibly disagree with. That's the beauty of Medium: Medium will open new perspectives, ways of thinking, and ideas you’ve haven't heard of yet - it'll make you a better thinking individual.

    Hi Vivian,

    Thank you for sharing this cool website as I have never visited it before but definitely will be now. It reminds me of a less commercialized version of Buzzfeed which is I site that I enjoy frequenting as well. I also enjoying writing myself, which you mentioned this platform is perfect for so I will definitely look into that. I find it interesting how a lot of the topics covered on this website are unique and stray greatly from that of mainstream media. I also think that a site look this would be a better useful for my time than aimlessly scrolling through social media and it is a lot more educational.

    I will be frequenting this site more often, thanks again for sharing!

Due to the freedom we have for the post this week, I took the time to really think about what I wanted to write in my post. My first thought was to discuss sports but I wanted to try and discuss a topic that could create more discussion. As most social media users have learned over the last few days, former SNL actor Pete Davidson, and pop star Ariana Grande have called off their engagement. While the speed at which their relationship seemed intense, at the end of the day, shouldn't we be more focused on the wellbeing of each of these individuals who very well may be walking away from the loves of their life? Just a social human-being

I want to draw on ideas from this week’s reading to share upon how this perspective has provided me some insights into why social media practices vary from person to person.  In society where there is a strong reliance on social media for interaction, connectivity and information, it is uncommon to encounter someone that does not use any form of social media whatsoever. The social practice of meeting a neighbour or starting a conversation with someone you see on a public bus has decreased because of the overlap of our public and private lives. Therefore, because there is less sharing exchanged exclusively with people solely immersed as beings in a public space, I believe that even those that attempt to resist the use of social media feel the need to be connected.
