Is Kanye onto Something?

Earlier this week as I was scrolling down through my Instagram I came across Kanye West addressing how society today seeks the need for online validation by the number of followers and likes we get on social media.
I wanted to share this in the blog because I think it relates very well to the class discussions and the video we viewed called “A Social Life”, especially in the themes of validation and depression.

While social media has its benefits, connecting with others online for example, I would agree with those who say it has many more negative impacts and online validation of oneself is one of them.
Kanye’s message held one very sad truth, “There are people who are committing suicide due to not getting enough likes. Seeking validation in the simulation,” he writes.  Which is a scary reality as the pressures of social media seem to become increasingly overwhelming for some.

Using his social media platforms and followings to his advantage in calling on social media giants Twitter and Instagram to loose social media metrics to allow others who want to live in a virtual world where no one is better than the next based on how many followers they have or how many likes the picture of their morning coffee got, might just be one of Ye’s not so crazy ideas.
