Blog Post One: Twitter
The social media app that I find myself checking most frequently is Twitter. I find Twitter to be a much more low maintenance social media that doesn’t emit as much pressure as other social media apps such as Instagram do.
Something I found very cool and interesting on Twitter over the last few years is the account @SpottedLaurier. I am sure almost every student has heard of this particular Twitter account before and can understand why I enjoy checking it every few days for new tweets and updates. I learned about @SpottedLaurier from one of my icebreakers in my first year and was told I had to check it out. I quickly learned that @SpottedLaurier is an account dedicated to Laurier students and is a great place where students can anonymously send in questions, comments or even compliments to other students. The anonymous aspect of the account makes for a safe place for students to get anything off their mind, or ask any question about the school that they don't feel comfortable asking in person.
I enjoy this account not only for its humorous aspects but also because of how relatable and practical it is. The account can be a great place for students to make jokes and funny comments but also a great place to get campus updates, reminders and even receive advice from fellow students. On a few occasions (especially in my first year) I’ve even found myself turning to @SpottedLaurier to answer some of my most burning questions about Laurier. It’s been 2 years since I was told by my icebreaker to give this account a follow and to this day I still rely on it for amusement and daily information about what's going on at our school.
I’d loved to hear your thoughts on @SpottedLaurier and what your favourite aspect of the account is!

Great post! I also really enjoy the twitter account "Spottedatlaurier" for all the humorous content they post. The reason I find their posts really funny is because all the memes and jokes made are very relatable for Laurier students. The memes are based off of things that Laurier students do/deal with on a daily basis - sometimes they are more broad and relate to University students in general (not just a specific school). I also used the twitter account for information regarding events happening on campus, classes getting cancelled, tests getting postponed, and many other things.
ReplyDeleteHey there,
ReplyDeleteThis was a great read! Having @Spotted is a wonderful way for all Laurier students to connect and embrace the small school feeling our university possesses, while making us all laugh or blush a little. One of the reasons I am in tune with Twitter these days is the relevance it has had on the world from a political aspect. An example for this is the controversial blocking of US citizens from President Trump's personal twitter account, something that didn't exist for previous presidents as they used only their official @POTUS account. In my opinion, this act is infringing on the constitution and preventing citizens from the right to free speech.
Thanks!
Such a relatable post! Spotted at Laurier is definitely one of my favourite twitter accounts as it enforces the Laurier community feel, and never fails to update it's followers on what's going on around campus. The account is increasingly popular with not only Laurier students following it but professors, students from other universities, and people who just want a good laugh online follow spotted too!
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post because it was relatable on so many levels. When I came to Laurier, my resident don informed us on what Spotted at Laurier was and told us to check it out. I ended up making a Twitter account just for the sole purpose of checking in on Spotted at Laurier because I enjoyed reading their tweets so much. Ever since then, I have been using Twitter for other uses and I am so happy I made the decision to get it. The community of Laurier students that follow this Twitter account, send in tweets, and interact with them as well can relate to the Wilfrid Laurier University Facebook group that exists. This Facebook group is similar to Spotted at Laurier because it allows students to post about events, important information, clubs, and even sell belongings and textbooks to other students! Although it is not an anonymous group, it still allows students to interact with one another and share just about anything that they want. Can you think of any other online communities that allow university students to come together and interact?

My icebreakers told me about @SpottedLaurier too. It is definitely an interesting place of anonymous interconnectivity. Like yourself, I used the page to keep updated with campus events, meme entertainment, relatable posts, and also the shoutouts people give other people.
ReplyDeleteIt is fascinating how people use the page as a place to call out the people they thought were cute, but also as a space to thank individuals for help by using phrases such as 'golden' vs 'not golden'. These commonly used phrases I think shapes a general community understanding that doing good is synonymous with being 'golden'. Also, I believe it creates a sense of awareness with those that interact with @SpottedLaurier that there is an etiquette that Laurier students should follow. For example, I remember reading posts where people expressed their frustrations with students who attended class but were online shopping as it was a distraction to their learning. Therefore, @spottedlaurier is a great tool to use to read relatable community insights and learn more about how students find kindness and mindfulness of other people 'golden' by looking at tweet likes, comments and replies.
