Blog Post #1 : Instagram

Personally, I find that Instagram can be an outstanding tool for connecting with friends and family on a day to day basis. Giving its users the opportunity to explore with their peers and those they might not ever be able to contact in a face to face setting. Users are able to share images and videos for those to see whoever they are available to scroll through this social media platform. Instagram allows for large consumption of information form multiple angles of people and multiple opinions on varieties of topics. One way of "staying in the loop" with society is by following popular Instagram accounts and popular/current celebrities that post current gossip for followers to read and learn about. It can be a very good way to be connected. however, the reason that i enjoy Instagram is because of the videos that are available, which can often be rather entertaining to watch. The amazing thing about this platform is its ability to be transformed in a Business opportunity rather then just social. Instagram has allowed for small start-up business' to evolve themselves and get the news out about their companies. Through the help of friends and family. It also has the power to make larger companies grow their social media platforms...

https://www.instagram.com/deloitte/ : This link is something that i worked on this summer at my internship at Deloitte. I had that chance to help the company grow their profile by posting on this daily. I found this is be very interesting as such a large company, at the start of its social media career had such a hard time gaining followers and attracting attention (many years ago). however, currently it sits at 60.5K followers and is continuing to expand every single day.

https://www.instagram.com/complex/ : This link on the other hand is something more social that many people follow to see what is going on with celebrities and what they are doing within their lives.

Overall, i find that social media is something that is cool to nearly everyone, however it just depends on which platform works best for them and which platform fits all the specific needs and interests of that particular person.

    I really enjoyed reading about your take on instagram as well as being able to see a few examples of how you have used the app in the past. I frequently use the app to communication and share information with friends and family who live far away so I cannot see them face-to-face very often. With the help of instagram I am able to keep in contact and not miss out on anything going on in their lives! I have also used instagram at my summer job - I went to different charity events with my work and took pictures and then posted them to the company instagram to keep their customers and potential partners interested and 'in the know' with what the company is up to.

    I liked how you mentioned that Instagram serves multiple purposes depending on how one chooses to utilize it.

    For most of us, Instagram is used in order to share snapshots of our lives, keep in touch with family and friends and stay in the loop with our favourite stars and companies. Personally I believe many are initially drawn to the visual aspect of Instagram however in recent years it has become a platform which offers much more than just a photo. With a story feature and the ability to communicate through DM and it seems to have combined snapchat and Facebook like qualities into their platform.

    Instagram is also extremely useful for business purposes as well as it is a free tool in which you can advertise your company or even build you brand. This is due to its ability to easily reach such a large number of possible consumers. A website for example would not be nearly effective as its stationary, a business’s Instagram profile however shows up on your explore page, in your suggestions and through others likes and comments. Instagram also allows for connecting with other companies around the world in which possible partnership can be created therefore expanding your businesses reach.

Due to the freedom we have for the post this week, I took the time to really think about what I wanted to write in my post. My first thought was to discuss sports but I wanted to try and discuss a topic that could create more discussion. As most social media users have learned over the last few days, former SNL actor Pete Davidson, and pop star Ariana Grande have called off their engagement. While the speed at which their relationship seemed intense, at the end of the day, shouldn't we be more focused on the wellbeing of each of these individuals who very well may be walking away from the loves of their life? Just a social human-being

I want to draw on ideas from this week’s reading to share upon how this perspective has provided me some insights into why social media practices vary from person to person.  In society where there is a strong reliance on social media for interaction, connectivity and information, it is uncommon to encounter someone that does not use any form of social media whatsoever. The social practice of meeting a neighbour or starting a conversation with someone you see on a public bus has decreased because of the overlap of our public and private lives. Therefore, because there is less sharing exchanged exclusively with people solely immersed as beings in a public space, I believe that even those that attempt to resist the use of social media feel the need to be connected.
