Blog Post #1: Instagram


Instagram is a great social media platform that can be used for infinite reasons. Whether it is used for sharing family pictures, running a business or just posting a selfie of a beautiful view. It can give users the goals they wish to obtain. The main purpose is to share pictures and provide content for the peers that follow you and same goes for your followers. Instagram expands into several other purposes where we can see that it promotes and markets services and products of corporations and brands. Several companies of the Fortune 500 established an Instagram account of their own to increase attention and popularity of their brand and associations. They used this app to obtain more sales through advertisements that target a specific demographic of Instagram users. Not only does the app allow large companies to expand, it can allow start-up companies to increase their clientele.

I was a marketing intern for a start-up condominium building for foreign investors and foreign students of Waterloo. Instagram has given me a job opportunity with my knowledge of using the app to promote and attract students who go to school in Waterloo. I had to customize certain posts and pictures on the instragram account to obtain the audience my managers were aiming for: foreign investors and foreign students. This is because the U-Style Condos wants to maximize profit by selling the condos and not for rent. Commonly local citizens wouldn’t rent, but local or foreign investors would so I used Instagram by posting pictures and ads that would attract them. Instagram also connects with Facebook which can market a brand furthermore.

    Hey Tarik,

    Instagram is an awesome application and definitely one of my favourites for
    various reasons, and as you mentioned, some of the reasons included being business related. Not only does Instagram allow you to view and keep up with friends and family, but also with a wide range of interning people/topics, etc. such as people who you watch on TV, like the Kardashians in my case, as well as things you might find inspirational such as workout accounts of food accounts. I personally use my Instagram to highlight some of my favourite times with my followers, and I also have a small business account to promote eyelash extension! In the summer I was getting dozens of messages within such a short period of time and it was really surprising but great to see the following and support from people in my local town. Although there are some drawbacks to social media, it can't be denied how many positive contributions it has made to our lives.

Due to the freedom we have for the post this week, I took the time to really think about what I wanted to write in my post. My first thought was to discuss sports but I wanted to try and discuss a topic that could create more discussion. As most social media users have learned over the last few days, former SNL actor Pete Davidson, and pop star Ariana Grande have called off their engagement. While the speed at which their relationship seemed intense, at the end of the day, shouldn't we be more focused on the wellbeing of each of these individuals who very well may be walking away from the loves of their life? Just a social human-being

I want to draw on ideas from this week’s reading to share upon how this perspective has provided me some insights into why social media practices vary from person to person.  In society where there is a strong reliance on social media for interaction, connectivity and information, it is uncommon to encounter someone that does not use any form of social media whatsoever. The social practice of meeting a neighbour or starting a conversation with someone you see on a public bus has decreased because of the overlap of our public and private lives. Therefore, because there is less sharing exchanged exclusively with people solely immersed as beings in a public space, I believe that even those that attempt to resist the use of social media feel the need to be connected.
