Blog Post #1 - Icebreaker
Hey everyone!
While I do spend a lot of time on social media, a website on the internet that I always enjoy is Sporcle, a trivia quiz website where users can create their own quizzes for others to play. Founded primarily for the purpose of sports quizzes (which is still an extremely popular genre on the site), Sporcle users now submit quizzes about music, geography, popular culture, history, and more. I feel like any time you allow users of a site to contribute to it's content you open up endless possibilities of the extent people will go to when creating quizzes, and that is exactly what I enjoy so much about the site. On one hand I can test the absolute depths of my knowledge of certain subjects with extensive 300-answer 20 minute long quizzes, or I can just see how quickly I can name the 50 states. Creating a user account allows Sporcle to track your recent quizzes, suggest quizzes to you based on your interests, create your own quizzes, and compare your scores with others based on score and time. Having things like this within the website that allow you to 'fall down a hole' or 'get lost' in a string of quizzes on the same topic is something that I find most comparable about Sporcle to other social media websites but YouTube in particular.
While certain things to do on the web like social media are stimulating, they can get very repetitive and mind-numbing to the point where it doesn't feel rewarding or enjoyable at all. Sporcle on the other hand, kind of like solving a sudoku or a crossword, is relaxing but at the same time keeps my mind active. I would definitely recommend Sporcle to anyone who has read this post right here. Link is below.

Hi Robert,
ReplyDeleteAlthough I have never heard of 'Sporcle' before, I am fascinated by your explanation. Often, I, as well as many of my peers find themselves using their phones aimlessly... closing them at the end of their session having accomplished little to nothing. In this sense, users are just pulling their phones out to burn time. This website interests me because in the instance that this is simply what you are trying to accomplish, you can finish your session having learned something or bettering yourself. Your comparison to sudoku is very effective, removing the mindlessness of surfing the web or our main pages to actually accomplish something.
Thanks!
Hey Robert,
ReplyDeleteThis is a cool looking website that I had never heard of before. You're definitely right that we get into this boring loop of simply cycling through our various social media channels when we're bored or just looking to find comfort from our phones but this seems like an actual productive, interesting and likely somewhat educational activity that you can do anytime. I'll be sure to check it out again in the future.
