Blog Post #1 - Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?

What first came to my mind when this mini blog assignment was introduced was a video I came across on my Facebook feed back in the beginning of high school called “Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?” When I watched this video for the first time, I was left speechless. This video is extremely empowering and inspirational to society regarding the barriers of technology in our day to day lives. The message being portrayed in the video is not to particularly bash the use of social media, but to make people realize that we often overuse it and are wasting value and meaning in our lives through this over consumption. This video relates directly to the discussions we’ve had in class regarding social media use as well as the video we viewed in class called “A Social Life.” “A Social Life” showed us how social media actually makes us anti social and often leads to depression. In the video “Can We Auto-Correct Humanity?” he expresses how many people use the internet for harmful reasons such as judging others through the freedom of social media platforms, as well as basing self-worth on how many followers one has and how many likes and comments one accumulates. Both videos focus on the “validation” factor that people look for through social media, as well as the loss of human connection. Inspiring and vastly realistic videos such as these are unfortunately not going to solve this massive issue in society, however will make many people much more aware of the effects of social media and how one can improve their misuse.

  1. Hi Mikayla,

I love the fact that you brought up this video, as I remember seeing this video prior to this class and feeling the same type of emotions that I did while watching "A Social Life" during lecture. His view of the Anti-social media was an interesting take for me, as like you said, it brings up the points of how it separates us from one another and even ourselves more than we think. We see interactions with others are quantifiable actions, such as likes and follows, and the same can be said about our self image/self worth.

I did this weeks post on Youtuber and Vloggers and your post really made me re-think about how these vloggers may be impacted by relying so heavily on these social medias, which are in fact 'anti social medias'. Individuals whose livelihoods revolve around social media are in a difficult dilemma where their lives and their work are one in the same. I often see many youtubers I follow make posts that differ from their regular upbeat content to explain their feelings of being lost and lonely from participating so heavily in social media landscapes. Your post put their struggles into perspective for me, as its the tool of the 'anti social media' itself that causes them to feel this way.
