Blog Post #1 - Buzzfeed

Hey Everyone,

For this week's blog post, I have decided to talk about a website that has been around since 2006 and is continuously growing. The platform I will be focusing on, Buzzfeed (https://www.buzzfeed.com), is an outlet for news and other media information to be published to the public. This American company is based out of New York City and has slowly but surely made their throughout the world. This company does not focus on breaking news, but instead brings forth content that may be entertaining to their audience. When the company first started out, there was only a website to go to. However, now it seems as though there are various outlets for their content to be shown, such as YouTube. With Buzzfeed blue, purple, and all the other YouTube channels this corporation has created, readers are able to get hilarious and real life content at the click of a button.


Personally, the reason I have chosen to talk auto Buzzfeed is because this media platform delivers a variety of information that would suit all kinds of individuals. Whether one wants to spend their time taking quizzes, looking at funny dog videos or even just checking up on what is happening around the world, this social media outlet has it all. This social media site is a place where I have turned to many times. Whether it be to help me with moving into University, assist me with tips of how to study for exams or even just to help me take my mind of things. Buzzfeed is a community of individuals that put out information for all types of individuals, no matter their mood or situation.

    I completely agree with your post suggesting that Buzzfeed has grown, evolved, and acts as both entertainment and education pieces. It’s funny because I never thought I would want a computer-based algorithm to guess what ice cream flavour I am until Buzzfeed made me think it was something I needed to know. This social media platform is executed so well that I will admit I am guilty of refreshing the page and retaking the quizzes to see what the result would have been had I changed my answers. This is not so much a practice I engage with much anymore, but I engage with their YouTube channel quite a bit due to the click-bait styled titles.

    The platform is definitely a captivating component of their content. The workout related videos always seem to leave me clicking until I have seen them all. Content such as “Men workout and Diet based on their DNA” doesn’t even apply to me, nor do I think at this moment in time would I pay to get a DNA based life-style regime, but it continues to be effective in louring me in. Therefore, I agree that their content caters to all individuals because even content they create that is seemingly for the male demographic proves to interest myself (a female) as well.

Blog Post #3

Due to the freedom we have for the post this week, I took the time to really think about what I wanted to write in my post. My first thought was to discuss sports but I wanted to try and discuss a topic that could create more discussion. As most social media users have learned over the last few days, former SNL actor Pete Davidson, and pop star Ariana Grande have called off their engagement. While the speed at which their relationship seemed intense, at the end of the day, shouldn't we be more focused on the wellbeing of each of these individuals who very well may be walking away from the loves of their life? I would think it is safe to say that those of us in this class won't garner as much as attention on social media if and when we find a life partner. Just a social human-being

I want to draw on ideas from this week’s reading to share upon how this perspective has provided me some insights into why social media practices vary from person to person.  In society where there is a strong reliance on social media for interaction, connectivity and information, it is uncommon to encounter someone that does not use any form of social media whatsoever. The social practice of meeting a neighbour or starting a conversation with someone you see on a public bus has decreased because of the overlap of our public and private lives. Therefore, because there is less sharing exchanged exclusively with people solely immersed as beings in a public space, I believe that even those that attempt to resist the use of social media feel the need to be connected.
