A Classic
Throwing it back with a classic, something that will never
fail, you basically can find anyone on it, and you can find out anything you
want on it, good old Facebook. I remember the days when we all first got a
Facebook account and you just had to have everyone friended. I also remember
God forbid your account ever got hacked because then you would have to start
from the beginning and rebuild that social profile you worked so hard to achieve.
Facebook being a social platform that is still growing and attracting a vast
majority of users, my personal benefit for the site is meme and random hilarious
videos.
My reason for still being such a Facebook junky is that I no
longer have to go on YouTube and search funny videos, they are already shared
and easily accessible on my Facebook homepage. Therefore, every day when I’m
bored, sad, or whatever I am feeling that day I am on Facebook having a good
laugh at something stupid that a friend shared or learning something
interesting from a shared news post. Overall I believe Facebook is a staple
social media platform and individuals get consumed in it everyday because of
the numerous distractions it has to offer.

Just like you, I think Facebook is a classic, the precursor to other social media platforms; its a site where you can share pictures like Instagram or your thoughts, like Twitter. Facebook was the first social media site where I had an account. I remember being in middle school and posting pictures with my friends or sharing interesting articles for my Facebook friends to read. Although I still have Facebook, I probably use the least out of all the accounts I have (i.e. Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat). I can't see myself getting rid of my account anytime soon, I'm not ready to let go of it yet.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I also see Facebook as a classic that would be fairly difficult to remove from my life entirely. I do not use Facebook for the content which comes across my newsfeed but rather, it is useful for remaining in contact with people over the years. Beyond that, it has been a non-personable way to begin communication between class mates, team members, and fellow workers for things like class projects. I do find that Facebook is HEAVILY advertised on, making their content appear spammy, which is why I prefer other platforms when I am searching for viable and current information.
ReplyDeleteHi Nicole! I use facebook in similar ways to you such as watching funny or interesting videos shared by my friends in my spare time. I also use facebook to find out about events that my friends are going to or for school projects.
ReplyDeleteI actually just watched a very interesting episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver about Facebook in Myanmar. In Myanmar, a group of majority muslim people called the Rohingya are being persecuted by the mostly Buddhist population of Myanmar. A lot of this persecution is done through hate speech on Facebook. Buddhist extremists post misinformation about Rohingya people attacking Buddhists. This perpetuates a myth of the Rohingya being violent to non-extreme Buddhists as a lot of them get their news through Facebook. Until 2015 there were no Burmese speaking moderators for the site and only then did they get 2 for a country where 18 million are regular Facebook users. Facebook has only recently started to really tackle this problem. Does Facebook have a responsibility to fix this or is it up to a countries government to intervene?
